Zone ControllerZone is the brain of the system. It receives audio from one or more sources — a streaming service, a media player, a local microphone input, an HDMI-connected screen — and routes that audio to the correct zones at the correct levels.
It also handles the DSP (digital signal processing) that optimises the sound for each space: equalisation, volume limits, delay alignment between speakers in a large room. Optimal Audio Zone controllers come in two primary formats.
Zone 4 is a passive unit requiring external amplification whereas Zone 4P is an all-in-one unit with built-in amplification, both for up to four zones — ideal for smaller venues where compact unit under the counter or in a back office is the cleanest solution.
Zone 8 and Zone 8P handles up to eight independently controlled zones and connects respectively to either external SmartAmp amplifiers or has integrated amplification— the right choice for larger venues where different zonal control is required.

Matching amplifier output to loudspeaker load and room size is one of the areas where an installer adds genuine value — under specifying an amplifier causes distortion at volume, or limits its capability and over specifying is unnecessary cost.

LoudspeakersLoudspeaker selection is driven by three factors: the acoustic characteristics of the space, the installation constraints, and the required volume and sound quality for the application.
Ceiling speakers — the Up range — are the standard choice for background music in most commercial spaces. They provide even, unobtrusive coverage and are acoustically well-suited to rooms with normal ceiling heights.
Up 3 works well in corridors and low-traffic areas. The Up 4 and Up 4S are the workhorse of most hospitality and retail installations. The Up 6 is specified for larger spaces or where higher volume is required — gym floors, exhibition halls, and larger restaurant rooms with high ceilings.
Wall-mounted Cuboid loudspeakers are the right choice where ceiling installation is not possible, where the space demands higher-impact sound — group exercise studios, presentation spaces, bar areas designed for higher volume — or where the aesthetic of a visible, architectural speaker is preferred.

The most important step in designing a multi-zone system is mapping your venue into its natural zones before choosing any equipment. A zone is any space that needs independent audio control.
The question to ask for each area is: would there ever be a reason for this space to play different music, at a different volume, from a different source, than the space next to it? If yes, it is a zone. If no, it can share a zone with adjacent spaces. For a typical café-bar-restaurant the zones might be: bar area, dining room, terrace, and toilets — four zones, served by a Zone 4 or Zone 4P.
For a hotel covering lobby, restaurant, spa, gym, bar and conference room: six zones, served by a Zone 8 or Zone 8P with spare capacity for growth. For a gym with a main floor, two studios, changing rooms and reception: five zones, served again by a Zone 8 or Zone 8P.
Two common zone planning mistakes to avoid. Over-zoning — creating separate zones for spaces that will always run identically, adding cost and complexity without benefit. Under-zoning — combining spaces with meaningfully different acoustic needs or schedules into one zone and then trying to compromise. A practical rule: plan for one more zone than you think you need. Venues evolve, spaces get repurposed, and adding a zone after installation is significantly more disruptive than planning for it from the start.
A multi-zone system can distribute audio from multiple sources simultaneously. Typical sources for a commercial installation include: A streaming service accessed via a network-connected media player or directly through the Zone controller’s WebApp interface.
This is the most common primary source for background music in hospitality and retail venues. Local inputs at individual zones — allowing a DJ, live band, or microphone to connect directly at zone level without affecting the rest of the venue.
HDMI inputs for video and audio from a PC or media player — used in museums and visitor attractions to synchronise the soundtrack of a video installation with the Zone controller, or in hotels to route screen audio to the room’s speakers.
