15” Subwoofer and Power Plant

Amplification, networking and DSP are all housed in MLA Mini’s companion MSX Power Plant, which includes 9 channels of Class D amplification – 1 channel for itself, and 8 channels to provide cellular drive of up to 4 bi-amped MLA Mini enclosures. Crossover, delay and EQ functions are implemented by a combination of IIR and FIR filters.

MLA Mini arrays and MSX’s can be remotely controlled over the U-NET™ network from a laptop or wireless tablet running VU-NET control software. Small-scale systems – such as the configuration of 4 x MLA Minis and 1 x MSX – can be set up to plug-and-play without external control, with onboard presets recalled by a rear panel selector switch.

The MSX is the same width as the MLA Mini and can be integrated into flown arrays or ground-stacked separately. It features a 15″ (380mm)/4″ (100mm) voice coil, long-excursion driver reflex-loaded in a very compact enclosure.

For complete installation versatility, the power plant module itself can be rack- mounted and its sub-bass amplifier channel used to power either an MSX or an alternative Martin Audio 4 Ohm passive subwoofer. For ultimate sub-bass performance, the MLA Mini/MSX combination can be used with the powered DSX subwoofer.

Some describe it as magic, but in its simplest terms a 16-enclosure MLA Mini array has 32 individual acoustic elements [cells], each with its own amplifier and DSP, which can be optimised by software to deliver the sound across the audience to meet the sonic goals required for any space.

MLA technology is the only technology on the market to allow multiple sonic goals to be prioritised and optimised accordingly. For example, not only can MLA Mini generate an even sound field over the audience, it can contain it as well — significantly reducing the influence of the room.

Hard Avoid® areas ─ such as behind and below the array, ceilings, balcony edges and beyond the venue perimeter ─ can also be programmed in. Vertical coverage can even be fine-tuned electronically in-situ to cope with changing environmental conditions and last-minute changes in rigging height, without having to re-rig.

Dual 18" Reflex Loaded Subwoofer

Capable of more than 146dB peak output at 1m half-space, the ground-stack DSX powered and networked subwoofer achieves extremely high output levels from such a compact enclosure.

The DSX’s high output capability is achieved by combining state-of-the-art driver technology with an onboard Class D amplifier module which can deliver 6kW peak power.

Its two reflex-loaded 18” (450mm)/4” (100mm) drivers perfectly balance low frequency extension and impact.

Forward output as well as rear rejection can be optimised to achieve coverage where required and cancellation elsewhere.

A flying version, the DSX-F can be flown alongside or at the top of MLA Compact arrays, as well as being ground-stacked. The ground-stack DSX can be upgraded to a DSX-F by an easy-to-fit accessory kit.

Class-leading output levels are achieved by combining Hybrid® horn/reflex loading with IPAL driver and amplifier technology. Hybrid loading of two ultra-long excursion 18” (460mm) neodymium magnet drivers perfectly balances low frequency extension with astounding chest-thumping bass that has a physical impact.

MLX enclosures are designed to be flown or ground-stacked and a combination of forward and rear facing enclosures can be configured as a directional subwoofer array with specific directional properties, including cardioid. Audio settings for the MLX can be controlled either cabinet-by-cabinet or as complete arrays via the VU-NET™ network, with its intuitive graphical interface. Symmetrical rigging enables MLX’s to face backwards in flown arrays.

MLX’s onboard Class D amplifier delivers a total peak output of 8500W. Its lightweight power supply auto-ranges to global mains voltages from 100 to 240V 50/60Hz and Power Factor Correction ensures stable performance independent of mains fluctuations, as well as reducing demands on the mains supply. The amplifier, power supply and control electronics are housed in a field-replaceable, fan-cooled module that is designed to withstand the varied environmental conditions — such as rain and high ambient temperatures — typically found in live sound applications.

The MLX enclosure is constructed from multi-laminate birch plywood and finished in a hard-wearing, textured black polyurea coating. A rigid perforated steel grille protects the front of the enclosure, while rubber cheeks protect the sides. Interlocking skids protect the top and bottom surfaces and prevent movement when stacked.

Up to 15 MLX’s can be flown from an MLA system flybar.

The MLD Downfill is an important MLA System component. Using just one – or at most – two Downfills to cover the first few rows maximises the projection and efficiency of the entire array.

Line array systems project, or throw better when the inter-cabinet angles are small. Unfortunately real-world requirements often dictate that the flown array must cover right up to the stage barrier. Arrays designed in this manner take on the familiar, highly-curved, banana shape. This is wasteful of array elements as almost half the array ends up being used to cover the first thirty metres/one hundred feet – leaving fewer boxes to reach the back seats.

The solution is to add a cabinet with a wider vertical dispersion. In the Downfill’s case this is 20°. Using only one – or at the most two – Downfills at the bottom of an array results in a lower curvature more directional array that projects much further and covers right up to the stage barrier.

The Downfill’s benefits are not confined to the vertical plane. With an extremely wide horizontal dispersion of 120°, the Downfill reaches to front-row-central as well as the ends of the front rows.

Our HiBlade™ patent-pending technology ensures ultra-high frequencies propogate right out to the edges of the dispersion pattern. Conventional 120° horns without this device tend to lose high frequency sparkle rapidly, as the listener moves off axis.
