THE INSTALL

HOTEL AV SYSTEMS | LEA INSTALL AT DOMAINE DE MAS DE PIERRE

Inovasystem turned to the team at Pilotefilms, LEA’s Authorized Distributor in France, who recommended the LEA Professional amplifiers. Philippe Pangallo, a Managing Partner at Inovasystem, was the lead engineer for the Domaine de Mas de Pierre project.

The most complicated part of this installation was that the existing network and wiring configuration had a mix of VLANs and Wi-Fi networks, as well as CCTV and hard-wire systems,” said Pangallo. “So, we needed components that were very installation flexible that we could configure as needed. The LEA amplifiers offered the Dante connectivity as well as a range of analog options that we needed.

Pangallo explained that a mix of more than 150 Sonance loudspeakers have been installed throughout the resort, covering a diverse range of spaces, including the gastropub restaurant and bar, a grill restaurant, the hotel lobby, spa and pool areas, fitness centers, guest cabins and more.

For system amplification, the team installed a set of 10 multi-channel, LEA Professional Connect Series amplifiers for a total of 48 audio channels. Several of the amplifiers are Dante ready, with some of the amps driving 100V speaker lines, and others powering low impedance speakers. Flexibility was essential for this installation.

Specific LEA Professional amplifiers in use, for reference:

CS354, CS164, CS352, CS88, CS164D, CS704D, CS354D, CS352D, CS168D, CS88D

In total, Inovasystem designed and installed the resort’s complete AV system, including digital signage, televisions, big screens, and the satellite reception and Chromecast systems.

THE CONCLUSION

HOTEL AV SYSTEMS | LEA INSTALL AT DOMAINE DE MAS DE PIERRE

The customer is delighted with their system, and everything is going well,” added Pangallo. “I’m glad that we specified LEA. The amps are performing as planned, and we are very pleased. We look forward to more LEA installations!.

We’d like to thank Philippe Pangallo and his team at Inoasystem for choosing our amps for this killer installation and we hope that the audio systems will continue to deliver reliable audio to hotel guests for years to come.

Power Amplifier Setup For Small Venues | Using Hi-Z & Low-Z

Power Amplifier Setup For Small Venues: Using Hi-Z & Lo-Z

The CONNECTSERIES amplifiers offer Low-Z, Hi-Z 70V, and Hi-Z 100V operation individually selectable per channel.  This comes in very handy in a wide variety of applications as it allows for the most flexibility in powering speaker systems with fewer amplifier models needed. Let’s take a look at some power amplifier setups using a small sports bar as an example:

All Low-Z

In this diagram all channels are set to Low-Z.  Each channel can have a different amount of speakers and can drive different impedance loads on every channel.  When determining what amp to power the speakers with, it is important to look at the AES or continuous rating of the loudspeaker.  Typically 1.5 to 2 times this power rating will allow for the full output potential of the speaker to be reached with program material but always check with the speaker manufacturer for recommended amplifier power.

All Hi-Z 70V/100V

Here, all channels are set to Hi-Z.  Transformer tap settings are listed below the speaker diagrams with totals from all speakers connected to that channel.  It is good practice to keep 20% headroom with regards to power, to allow for full output potential of the speaker.  With 160W available per channel, maintaining 20% headroom would mean the sum total of all loudspeakers on that channel shouldn’t exceed 128W.

Mixed Low-Z and Hi-Z 70V/100V

This shows the full potential of the amplifier being able to drive each channel as desired with a mix of Low-Z and Hi-Z speakers on the same amplifier.  In addition to this, Channel 2 has subwoofers on it which may require more power than the speakers on the other channels.  Smart Power Bridge is enabled on this channel which doubles the power from 350W to 700W on this channel.  Now a higher power amplifier isn’t required just for the subwoofers, they are properly powered on the same amplifier as the rest of the speakers.

Sports Stadium Audio Visual Systems | LEA Install At Dowdy–Ficklen Stadium

Sports Stadium Audio Visual Systems | LEA Install At Dowdy–Ficklen Stadium
When East Carolina University stadium experienced debilitating audio issues right in the middle of football season, a solution had to be found before the fan experience started to suffer. And what could be better to power the sports stadium audio visual system for the ECU Pirates, than a rack packed with shark fins.

Let’s dive into the system details for the who, what, why, and how of this audio system touchdown.

THE SPEC

SPORTS STADIUM AUDIO VISUAL SYSTEMS | LEA INSTALL AT DOWDY–FICKLEN STADIUM

Venue: Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, home of the ECU Pirates

Install Purpose: Old system malfunctions

Integrator: PC Sound

Product Used: CONNECTSERIES 704D (X8)

THE VENUE

Dowdy–Ficklen Stadium is the on-campus football facility at East Carolina University for the East Carolina Pirates in Greenville, North Carolina. The stadium has a capacity of 50,000, making it the second largest college stadium in North Carolina.

THE INTEGRATOR

SPORTS STADIUM AUDIO VISUAL SYSTEMS | LEA INSTALL AT DOWDY–FICKLEN STADIUM

PC Sound is here to serve you, in everything that is music-related such as finding the perfect guitar for your daughter’s birthday, repairing your guitar amp that you need for a weekend gig, putting together the sound system that fits your needs, teaching your son how to play the guitar or drums, or providing a sound system rental with lights for your wedding day.

THE INSTALL

SPORTS STADIUM AUDIO VISUAL SYSTEMS | LEA INSTALL AT DOWDY–FICKLEN STADIUM

James Braddy, Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) at PC Sound, a local specialist in pro audio, video and lighting installations, got a call on a Monday in September from the Associate Athletics Director at ECU, Greg Pierce. Pierce explained that the previous weekend’s home game had been overshadowed by a series of audio issues.

“At the time, half the sound system didn’t sound like it was working,” said Pierce. “I knew we needed a solution and we needed it yesterday.”

On the weekend in question, stadium goers and players had complained that they couldn’t hear, and the system would cut in and out. According to Braddy, 60% of the stadium’s legacy amplifiers were off and the other ones were going into thermal protection mode.

While PC Sound tried to find a solution fast, they also knew the current supply chain could be an issue.

“I have always been able to get amps from LEA Professional through their rep Mavric and they are my go-to provider,” commented Braddy. “We put the order in on a Tuesday at 7pm and within 4 minutes I had a reply from Scott Robbins the VP of Sales, with different options. The amplifiers were delivered to us on that Thursday and on Friday we did the install, ready for the weekend’s games.”

For Braddy, most of this was possible because of the simple set up feature on the Connect Series amplifiers.

“One of my favorite things about these amplifiers is just the speed of setup”, said Braddy. “Being able to push a button and connect to it with my phone or iPad tablet, without downloading an app or registering an account is fantastic.”

The PC Sound team installed eight of our 704D Dante Connect Series amplifiers.

“The new amps, combined with a new mixer we added, ensured the stadium sounded much cleaner and clearer than it had ever sounded before, even though we were still dealing with some blown speakers at the time,” continued Braddy.

The following game sounded even better according to the team at PC Sound, and the stadium was ready for homecoming the following week, which included a performance by a live band.

Braddy continues to choose LEA amplifiers for all installs he conducts. “These amps have built-in DSP processing and tons of flexibility with the ability to double the power on one channel without having to compromise on losing a channel. Not only that, they look and sound great!”

Currently, the system at ECU runs on analog connections, but the plan in the immediate future is to switch it over to a Dante audio network. This provides the stadium with another safety feature, if the Dante network goes down for any reason, it will automatically switch to analog.

THE CONCLUSION

SPORTS STADIUM AUDIO VISUAL SYSTEMS | LEA INSTALL AT DOWDY–FICKLEN STADIUM
For Greg Pierce, the new system is exactly what they needed.

“It was everything we needed and some. I couldn’t have asked for better and we’re just so grateful to have a superior sound system in the stadium for our players and fans alike.”

We’d like to thank James Braddy and his team at PC Sound for choosing our amps for this killer installation and we hope that the audio systems will continue to deliver reliable audio to Pirates fans for years to come.

Located just steps from Lake Ontario, The Pearle Hotel & Spa officially opened to guests on the first of November, 2021. The hotel, which is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, boasts 151 guestrooms, two dining facilities, expansion meeting space, two large ballrooms, and a spa.

THE INTEGRATOR

HOTEL AUDIO VISUAL SYSTEMS | LEA INSTALL AT THE PEARLE HOTEL & SPA

Branch AV, one Canada’s newest audiovisual solutions company, was tasked with designing and integrating the entire AV system from the ground up. The company, which was established in 2020 by Bob Guy and George Puthenkulam supported by a team of experienced audiovisual professionals, works across various industries including performing arts, government, education and entertainment. The team are laser focused on providing the best user experience for their clients.

THE INSTALL

HOTEL AUDIO VISUAL SYSTEMS | LEA INSTALL AT THE PEARLE HOTEL & SPA

For The Pearle hotel’s AV needs, the integrator turned to local partner SC Media who supplied nine LEA Professional Dante Connect Series amplifiers to power the new hotel’s sound system. George Puthenkulam, Partner at Branch AV, first made sure to understand exactly what the hotel would need from an AV system.

“The main thing hotel management was looking for from an audio system, was functionality,” said Puthenkulam. “However, I wanted to dig deeper, so we studied all their venues to see exactly how they are used. With that knowledge, we came up with a sound system design and user experience that they are happy with.”

The entire project was conducted during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic which meant delays in various equipment and constant changes.

“There were various iterations made throughout the project because the spaces kept changing,” said Puthenkulam. “With Covid happening it was pretty challenging trying to coordinate with all the trades, and make sure everything would be completed on time. Luckily the LEA amps were in stock and there were no delays from that end.”

Branch AV utilized nine LEA Professional Dante Connect Series amps for this install to give them the channel count they needed including one Connect 168D, one Connect 88D, one Connect 704D, two Connect 84D and four of the Connect 354D amps. As the configuration of the spaces changed, so too did room for equipment racks.

“One of the challenges we had was finding space for racks,” explained Puthenkulam. “As you can imagine, a hotel of this size requires a lot of processing. What LEA provided us was the ability to do a certain amount of central processing, as well as decentralize it, but manage it all from one location, the entire system runs on a Dante audio network.”

Puthenkulam explained that using IP standard, network-based amplifiers had many benefits for the team, particularly as the design within the hotel changed.

“The placement of speakers is always a problem, especially when there are multiple trades trying to compete for real estate,” explained Puthenkulam. “We zoned the space well, so that our infrastructure could be coordinated with all the other trades, including lighting control, security, fire safety, et. which is necessary and required in a hotel of this sort. However, we did have new zone needs that came up; so, designing the system around network-based, multi-channel amplifiers gave us a lot of flexibility.”

Branch AV are utilizing the Connect Series Crestron Control Module to control and monitor essential functions and features within the LEA amplifiers. Third-party control plugins such as these are part of the LEA Professional control ecosystem, in addition to local area network amplifier control using LEA’s Web UI and Cloud Platform.

“With Creston the client is able to monitor everything centrally from their back office and so from a user experience point of view they really feel like they have 100% control,” said Puthenkulam. “For us at Branch AV this is extremely important, we don’t want clients to be labored managing an AV system but it’s also essential to give them the ability to view what is going on and truly feel secure in the system.”

THE CONCLUSION

HOTEL AUDIO VISUAL SYSTEMS | LEA INSTALL AT THE PEARLE HOTEL & SPA

Branch AV has been using LEA Professional in all their AV projects and will continue to do so, not only because of their form factor and network-based design, but because of their confidence in the team behind the product.

“When Blake Augsburger and his team set up LEA a few years ago, we knew that they would have a completely different perspective than other manufacturers, and that LEA would build a product that puts the customer at the center,” commented Puthenkulam. “When you are customer- driven and are determined to rally around them it’s really special, and that’s the LEA way!”

We’d like to thank George Puthenkulam and his team at Branch AV for choosing our amps for this killer installation and we hope that the audio systems will continue to deliver reliable audio for years to come.

Amplifiers For Smart Homes | LEA Install At A 15,000 Sq. Ft. Smart Home

Smart homes are on the rise and it just so happens that our smart amps fit extremely well into the systems powering them.

Our integrator friends at Wired Media Solutions recognized this as well during their recent 15,000 sq. ft. smart home project where they used eleven of our CONNECTSERIES amplifiers to send audio to nearly every room of this gorgeous Newport Beach, CA home. From the kitchen to each bedroom and even the bathrooms, the system is using a total of 84 LEA audio channels to power multiple zones over a Dante distributed network.

Let’s dive into the details!

THE SPEC

Product Used: CONNECTSERIES 168D (X10) and 164D (X1)

THE VENUE

AMPLIFIERS FOR SMART HOMES | LEA INSTALL AT A 15,000 SQ. FT. SMART HOME

The owners of a 15,000-square-foot smart home in Newport Beach, California, wanted to upgrade and integrate an all-home sound system. The home consists of multiple audio zones all run over a Dante networked system. With speakers in nearly every single room as well as the outdoor patio, this home needed a powerful, small form factor amplifier solution.

THE INTEGRATOR

Wired Media Solutions provides seamlessly integrated high-end home automation solutions. Cohesive and invisible, as home automation should be.

THE INSTALL

AMPLIFIERS FOR SMART HOMES | LEA INSTALL AT A 15,000 SQ. FT. SMART HOME

Ryan Wilkinson, President/CEO, WMS Wired Media Solutions, explained that while the home is spacious, the integration team was challenged to fit the equipment into the existing small closet. Wilkinson needed to save as much room as possible to cover the home properly from this space while still delivering the channel count, power, and network connectivity required to distribute and control the audio throughout the house.

We had a big constraint of space and input power, but we still needed a high channel count,” said Wilkinson, “The LEA amplifiers fit perfectly because they are all multi-channel, single-rack-unit amps that don’t draw much power, they have built-in Ethernet connectivity and DSP, and they deliver plenty of output power to handle the entire house.

The team installed a set of 11 Connect Series amplifiers from LEA Professional, including ten 168D 8-channel amplifiers with 160 watts per channel to cover the indoor rooms, and a 164D 4-channel amp, for an outdoor patio area — for a total of 84 audio channels.

Every room and space in the house has speakers — bathrooms, bedrooms, common areas, outdoor areas, kitchen, everywhere — and it’s a mix of different types and brands of speakers,” explained Wilkinson. “Maintaining the ability to power zones individually gave us the ability to finely tune the volume and DSP presets across the various types of speakers and areas.

The LEA amps’ built-in DSP was a big help in this project, and we’re starting to use it more in other smart home installations,” said Wilkinson. “It saves space in the rack, greatly streamlines the entire installation, and makes system set-up and adjustments easy.

Physically, DSP-powered equipment can do more with less, and therefore frees up critical rack space and reduces system weight. All the input routing, room tuning, speaker tuning, and limiting are built into the amplifier, which greatly reduces the need for additional hardware. Not only does this free up rack space, but it also simplifies system setup and reduces the possibility of issues arising within the system.

By using a digital input router, technicians can route any input to any output. And with the integration of an audio network, as with Dante, it’s all just an Ethernet cable away. LEA amplifier built-in DSP features include advanced DSP Architecture, an Input Matrix, Crossovers, Parametric EQ, Output Delay, Output Protection, User-Adjustable Limiting, and Load Monitoring.

The system is all Dante networked and Crestron controlled, and we designed a custom touch-panel interface, so it’s all very easy to manage,” said Wilkinson, “Everything’s time-delayed and leveled correctly; all the limiters and speaker protections are in place, and it sounds great. And if needed, we can remote into the LEA amps for status reports or to make adjustments — we couldn’t be happier.

THE CONCLUSION
