The studio, which runs on a 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos system with Lipinski speakers and four LEA Professional amplifiers, is already attracting musical talent from far and wide. This was Hellow’s first experience working with LEA Professional amps, but as a veteran of the industry he had already heard great things about the company’s IoT-enabled amplifiers.

“Everything in this studio is of the highest standard and we could not afford to have any weak links in the chain,” commented Hellow. “Working with LEA Professional we now have the best sounding, best looking amplifier on the market.”

The team chose two Connect Series 354, one Connect Series 702 and one Connect Series 164 to power the studio. Studio Manager Jeremy Williams said that for him, sound clarity is the reason why LEA Professional amplifiers pair so well with the Dolby Atmos system.

“What you need to have with Atmos is pinpoint precision,” explained Williams. “In a studio of our size we are dealing with potential phase issues and frequencies bouncing a lot and so between the Lipinski speakers and LEA amps we barely touched our EQ. These are some of the clearest sounding amps on the market.”

As an experienced sound engineer, Williams explained that one of his biggest worries with amps is having a passerby make unwanted adjustments. So, in a busy studio, frequented by different parties every week, this was not something he wanted to face. With LEA Professional’s clean external interface and lack of visible power button there is no chance of this happening. Not only this, Williams also has full control over amp settings via the LEA Cloud platform.

All LEA Professional amplifiers leverage the built-in Amazon Web Services (AWS) IoT Core. This cloud platform allows integrators to control and monitor critical operational data points for maintaining system health securely and remotely. Users simply create a cloud account at www.lea professional.cloud, then individual amplifiers or entire amp systems can be accessed and controlled securely, from anywhere in the world, without the need to VPN into a Local Area Network.

“The network interface is beyond anything I have seen, and the fact that I can see all four amps on a single page is a massive time saver,” said Williams

THE CONCLUSION

LEA AMPS POWER DOLBY ATMOS STUDIO: NASHVILLE, TN

The team’s end goal is to ensure more engineers and artists can experience first-hand the immersive effects of Dolby Atmos — including with the opening of their next studio, to be built in Romania over the coming months.

When asked whether they plan to specify LEA Professional for the project, the answer was ‘absolutely’.

We would like to thank both Joe Hellow & WJB Media for choosing our amps for this killer installation and we cannot wait to work with the both of you on future projects!

There currently is a mix of 10, two- four- and eight-channel, Dante-enabled digital amplifiers from LEA Professional powering the system. Specifically, the team specified LEA Dante Connect Series 168D, 354D, and 352D amplifiers.

“When I first learned about LEA amps, I immediately saw that the feature set is incredible. This is definitely an amp line I wanted to carry,” said Taylor. “The form factor is great, the channel count, the power, the flexibility — the remote configurability was a huge selling point for my client since I can remote into the system and monitor and fix things that might need to be adjusted. They’re super cool, the support is great and they sound excellent.”

To best cover and manage the AV for the large, multi-use facility, the team designed a 50-zone, 70-volt, distributed system. AT Productions worked with Seattle based professional sales partner Brownestone who recommended LEA’s Connect Series amplifiers for the project.

“We knew right away that LEA’s technologies would be a great fit for this project”, commented Mike Charles, Principal at Brownestone. “We were proud to introduce AT Productions to these ground breaking amplifiers, the complex needed an innovative solution to improve efficiency, and LEA’s technologies did just that.”

The system is built upon a Dante network and is controlled by touchscreen-based software from Symetrix. Sonance speakers are used throughout the facility. The slot rooms and restaurants feature background music, and the bars have audio support for big-screen, televised sports and other programming. The facility’s two-floor bingo hall features a main downstairs floor with a couple of audio zones and two additional zones upstairs. The previous system was underpowered and built upon different systems and platforms over the years, so there was no continuity; some areas were too loud, some too soft, and there was no global control.

“We put a callback system in place with a monitor above the bingo caller bringing in audio from upstairs so the bingo caller can hear if anybody upstairs calls bingo,” said Taylor. “We placed ceiling microphones upstairs that feed down through the DSP to the bingo callers monitors. For the bingo hall, it’s all very transparent. They can now hear every “bingo” called out.”

THE CONCLUSION

LEA AMPS POWER 50-ZONE SYSTEM GAMING COMPLEX: BJ’S BINGO HALL

The BJ’s Bingo project was the first time Taylor specified LEA amplifiers. Still, in the meantime, his team has used LEA amps on other projects, and each of those projects has been easily commissioned, with very happy end-users.

“The client very much wanted this to be a turnkey, easy-to-use solution, so the remote and cloud connectivity is an essential feature,” said Taylor. “With the touch screens and iPad apps that they can walk the entire building and control the audio levels. The client pushes a button, and the music plays, and they have volume control where they need it; they’re very happy. And if something happens — such as a recent power loss — we can log in, verify or reset anything we need to get up and running quickly.”

Taylor added that he is now specifying LEA amplifiers for every 70-volt installation project that is coming across his desk.

“We have other projects in the works and I’m very excited to use LEA amplifiers,” added Taylor. “The amps are very reliable, sound great, have all the connectivity you need, and LEA as a company has been very supportive and responsive to any question we have had. These guys aren’t messing around; they take care of their dealers.

We’d like to thank everyone at Brownstone AV Reps and AT Productions for choosing our amps for this killer installation and we hope that the audio systems will continue to deliver reliable audio for everyone at BJ’s Bingo Hall for years to come!

Prior to discovering LEA Professional amplifier technology, Hazelwood was frustrated with other manufacturers, whose technology limited him to playing only within their proprietary ecosystems.

“For my installations, I want best-in-class products for each system, but I also want that system to be able to be controlled and monitored autonomously,” said Hazelwood. “Many of my projects include tactile control interfaces that inspire interactivity, and with the LEA Open API platform, their Connect Series amplifiers can integrate with almost any AV system, giving me the flexibility that I need.”

LEA Professional’s Open API gives system integrators access to a diverse range of plug-ins, as well as expanded local area network amplifier control capabilities using LEA Professional’s web user interface and cloud platform. This ensures that LEA products will play well with other systems so integrators can depend on LEA for any installation requirements. For Hazelwood, this means that with the help of software developer Caleb Szalacinski, he can build custom controllers that are designed both physically and digitally to work with LEA amps.

“While the AV market is increasingly focused on solutions for touch-panel control, tangible hardware controllers seem to be phasing out,” commented Hazelwood. “I wanted to be able to provide my clients with simple, analog-like controls that utilize the benefit of smart technology and of course, look beautiful. I decided to develop my own, and LEA made this possible for me with their open API. I currently have them working in a handful of locations, and plan to eventually make a version of it available for other integrators.”

For Hazelwood, his switch to LEA Professional wasn’t only due to their flexibility but also the accessibility of the amplifiers. At a time when supply chain issues are a battle for other manufacturers, LEA Professional has been able to provide amplifier solutions when he needed them, even on projects with tight timelines.

For one large installation at a bowling alley in Nashville called Eastside Bowl, Hazelwood had to switch out all his planned equipment for new manufacturers at the last minute due to inventory issues. That’s when he found the magic of LEA’s Connect Series amplifiers, with its seamless design, IoT technology and user-friendly interface. It wasn’t long before LEA became Hazelwood’s go-to amplifier solution.

“Ordinarily, our controller will be configured to adjust music zones independently, but in this case as there was only one zone of music and the speakers needed to be tri-amped, we programmed the controller to adjust 3 channels of the amp simultaneously, utilizing the LEA’s DSP crossovers.”

THE CONCLUSION

LEA AMPS POWER CUSTOM DESIGN SOLUTIONS FOR BOUTIQUE HOSPITALITY

With many AV manufacturers having inventory issues and ultimately not having products available, Hazelwood Laboratories discovered LEA Professional and the rest is history.

“I have every LEA install in my cloud platform, allowing me to help clients no matter where I am,” commented Hazelwood. “I set up Hazelwood Labs to challenge the typical assumption regarding the role of technology in our lives and I want to work with manufactures who do the same. This is just one of the many reasons why I will continue to provide LEA technology to my clients.”

We would like to thank Hazelwood Laboratories for choosing our amps for these killer installations and we hope that the audio systems will continue to deliver reliable audio for the crowd at The Daily and Barista Parlor for years to come.

THE INSTALL

LEA AMPS POWER PERFORMING ARTS THEATER : ALFA THEATER

AudioMaster CZ initially received a call from the theater’s sound engineer explaining that they were having trouble with their system and needed them to work on a complete new system design. The team then worked with Jan Zvánovec, from Audio Kropik, the largest seller of AV equipment in the South Bohemia region, to bring the design to life.

“The theater’s sound engineer was having big issues with their existing system,” said Jan Zvánovec, Project Manager, Audio Kropik. “We met him on site and discovered that they had speakers that were not working and older amplifiers that were deteriorating and beyond repair — the system had simply reached its end of life.

The team began searching for system components to fit the theater’s requirements and limited budget. A critical specification was to find high-quality, multi-channel, audio-network-ready amplifiers that were affordable but could also deliver the power needed for the theater.

“I had not used LEA amps before, but they seemed to have all the features we were looking for, at a good price, and they were available,” said Zvánovec. “The amp’s cloud technology, built-in DSP, and the preset features were also very interesting; I wanted to see what these amps could do.”

The team upgraded the theater system with a set of three Dante Connect Series amplifiers. Two LEA CS354D, 4-channel amplifiers are used to power the upper and lower, left, right, and center main speakers, and an LEA CS704D 4-channel amplifier is used to power the system’s subwoofers. The new system comprises a mix of nine JBL AE Compact Series loudspeakers. A Yamaha DM2000 digital mixing console, equipped with a Dante network card, communicates directly with the LEA amplifiers via the Dante audio network protocol.

“The amps’ built-in Dante technology made for an extremely simple connection between the mixing room and technical room; everything worked on the first connection, and we have a lot of flexibility for easy, future upgrades,” said Zvánovec. “And there is also no need for external speaker processors because everything is managed by the DSP that’s built into the LEA amps. These features alone saved the client a lot of money and time.”

Using professional audio amplifiers with built-in DSP has become the standard practice for many AV system installers. DSP-powered equipment can do more with less, and therefore installers don’t need to buy, install, or maintain dedicated DSP equipment. Integrated DSP frees up critical rack space and reduces system weight. All the input routing, room tuning, speaker tuning, and limiting are built into the amplifier, so equipment racks are smaller, lighter, and cleaner.

“All the connectors and features of the LEA amplifiers are very logically arranged and well-engineered; the manufacturer thought of everything from the installer point of view,” said Zvánovec. “Setting up the amplifiers with a web browser is great, and we created several presets and stored them in the amps so the client can easily change the settings. Finally, no complicated installation and setup of applications; it was all very quick and easy.”

THE CONCLUSION

LEA AMPS POWER PERFORMING ARTS THEATER : ALFA THEATER

With many AV manufacturers having supply chain issues and ultimately not having products available, Alfa Theater realized thy only had a small window to finish this project to maintain their busy show schedule uninterrupted.

“Upon first hearing the new system, the client was extremely impressed in that the system sounded so much clearer and better than they had expected; this is thanks not only to the new speakers but also thanks to the powerful, natural sound of the LEA amplifiers,” added Zvánovec.  “I’m glad we had this opportunity to learn about and try the LEA amps; we’re definitely adding LEA to our list as a preferred amp supplier for future projects.”

We would like to thank both Audio Master CZ and Audio Kropik for choosing our amps for this killer installation and we hope that the audio systems will continue to deliver reliable audio for the audience at the Alfa Theater for years to come.

HiZ and LoZ: When To Use HiZ-70V, HiZ-100V, and LoZ

HiZ and LoZ: When To Use HiZ-70V, HiZ-100V, and LoZ

Our smart amplifiers give users the ability to customize their HiZ/LoZ settings for each individual amplifier channel.

By visiting the settings page of our UI (gear icon), you can select HiZ-70V, HiZ-100V, or LoZ for each channel.

So, for instance, channel 1 can be set to LoZ, while channel 2 can be set to HiZ-100V.

This gives integrators the flexibility to power a variety of different types of speakers on a single amplifier, instead of having to buy one amplifier for the 70V or 100V zones and another amplifier for the low impedance zones.

But for those who may be new to configuring professional audio systems, these terms might cause some confusion.

Let’s dive into what each setting actually means and when to use them.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HIZ-70V, HIZ-100V, AND LOZ

HIZ AND LOZ: WHEN TO USE HIZ-70V, HIZ-100V, AND LOZ

Before we get into the specific differences, it’s good to talk about impedance.

Impedance is the resistance to an alternating current in a circuit. You can measure impedance in units called ohms. You’ll definitely see this show up on spec sheets and manuals whenever you’re working with audio products. Ohms are represented by the ohm symbol which looks like this – Ω.

When we’re talking about things like HiZ and LoZ, we’re referring to a specific impedance range.

HiZ is a higher impedance range. LoZ is a lower impedance range.

So, the “Z” in these terms actually represents the word impedance.

90 + 90 + 90 + 90 + 90 + 90 = 540 Watts

In HiZ applications, you won’t have to calculate the actual impedance.  You simply add up the wattage of all the speakers tapped on each 70V or 100V Zone.  A good rule of thumb to follow is to have 20% of power above the calculated total wattage needed, this will ensure that you have sufficient headroom to achieve high-quality audio, even during high transients in the source material.

For example, if you have a 700-Watt amplifier channel at 70V or 100V, you’ll want to take 700 x 0.8 which equals 560 Watts.  If you want to follow the 20% headroom rule, you will only want to tap 560 watts worth of speakers.

In LoZ applications, if you are connecting more than one speaker you will have to do an impedance calculation using ohms law and then also add up the wattage of the speakers.  If the impedance isn’t too low and the total wattage of the multiple speakers is below the amplifier’s power rating, then the system should operate properly and safely.

Let’s look at each individually.

Total Impedance = R1 x R2 / (R1 + R2) | 4Ω = 8 x 8/(8+8)

HIZ-70V

HIZ AND LOZ: WHEN TO USE HIZ-70V, HIZ-100V, AND LOZ

70V systems are known as constant voltage systems and are most commonly used in commercial audio systems in the United States depending on local regulations and system requirements.

These systems allow for longer cable runs and more speakers per amplifier, and in many instances, smaller gauge cable can be used to save money.

This setting is ideal for commercial buildings, corporate applications, retail, educational, government, and public address systems.

HIZ-100V

HIZ AND LOZ: WHEN TO USE HIZ-70V, HIZ-100V, AND LOZ

100V systems are also constant voltage systems. However, this setting is most commonly used in European countries and other regions outside of the United States. Some systems with this setting may require cables to be run through conduits.

100V systems have the same benefits as a 70V system with a couple of advantages, because of the higher operating voltage the impedance stays high, resulting in lower current, allowing for smaller gauge wire across even longer distances and in some instances the ability to power more speakers.

This setting is ideal for commercial buildings, corporate applications, retail, educational, government, and public address systems.

LOZ

HIZ AND LOZ: WHEN TO USE HIZ-70V, HIZ-100V, AND LOZ

Low Impedance systems, also known as 8Ω systems, are ideal for high-performance applications requiring higher fidelity. These systems are commonly comprised of speaker components that require more power.

LoZ systems require shorter cable runs for optimal performance.  In some instances, depending on the power of the speaker and the length of the cable run, a higher gauge cable may be required to account for line loss over the length of the cable run.

This setting is most commonly found in applications such as nightclubs, live performance systems, churches, and restaurants.
