The Point DC

The Point DC

ABOUT THE POINT DC

Stationed at the tip of Buzzard Point in Washington D.C., where the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers meet, The Point D.C. waterfront restaurant occupies the building of the former U.S. Coast Guard headquarters and former FBI Headquarters.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Best-in-class fidelity and performance for 70V/100V applications  that disappears into the design of each zone
  • Find an audio solution with common voicing and even, balanced coverage to connect with people in each zone for world class ambiance anywhere on the property
  • Weatherproof rated audio solution that can withstand the elements on the outdoor patio
  • Simple and easy to use system for the staff to use with ease
  • Audio system that is capable of adjusting to provide ambient music or more powerful sound for larger private events

THE CHALLENGE

With a reputation for amazing cuisine and world-class ambiance, the D.C. based hospitality group Fish & Fire Food Group knew that they wanted to create a space that would not only be aesthetically pleasing and draw customers in, but also incorporated the highest quality, yet easy to use, audio system that would set them apart from other local restaurants.

With numerous zones throughout the 12,500 square foot property, including 22-foot ceilings with exposed ductwork in the main dining room, a private dining room, and an outdoor patio area, the challenge was to deliver best-in-class sound, while ensuring volume levels were comfortable to listen to in any location.

The space was also purposefully built with future opportunities in mind that could easily transform from restaurant to event space, depending on the needs of the customer. These needs would range from the ability to achieve clear, beautiful sound for day-to-day operations, or more powerful bass for private events.

With a very broad vision, and a desire for high-quality audio to elevate the distinct spaces throughout the property, the team at Fish & Fire Food Group reached out to Hill Residential dealer, One Source Systems, for their unique, creative, and technical capabilities and for their ability to bring world-class technology into the space to bring their vision to life.

METHODOLOGY

Professional audio integration is more than merely filling a space with sound. It’s a tangible design element and a critical part of the space’s environment that is meant to create a mood and elevate the senses without distracting from the designer’s vision and aesthetic goals. For over 30 years, the architectural speaker pioneers at Sonance have continually explored and refined the fine art of musical fidelity within a designed space, with their series of award-winning speakers.

“I know the team at the Fish & Fire Food Group understands how audio enhances the experience more than most restaurateurs, so we wanted to make sure that whatever we installed was something that would complement the space and totally enhance the customer experience. When we have a client like the team at Fish & Fire Food Group that has demanding requirements for sound and aesthetics, it’s a no brainer for us to go with Sonance. Sonance has the best 70V speakers that I have ever heard.”

– Randy Baker, Co-Founder

One Source Systems

BEYOND EXPECTATION

“We did not want hold back on any of the bells and whistles because we know what a profound impact they can have on a space, which is why we required a state-of-the-art audio system. One Source Systems knew that to meet my expectations, we needed a well-balanced, clear, and easy-to-use audio system in our very complicated and diverse environment that had lots of challenging zones. I told One Source Systems to only use the best of the best because I did not want any subpar equipment in our restaurant and that is why together we picked Sonance and James Loudspeaker audio solutions. Sonance and James Loudspeaker provided a technically sophisticated system to achieve the right sounds in different areas and I have a feeling that those details will help increase business. People may not realize it, but oftentimes the memory of an occasion is tied not only to the food you ate, but the song you listened to or what was playing during that moment. Those little details paired with the waterfront views makes this an occasion-based destination and is what keeps people coming back.” – Gregory Casten, Founder The Point D.C.

RESULTS

The team at One Source Systems wanted to ensure that they integrated consistent, even balanced audio throughout the entire restaurant that was not only comfortable to listen to, but also easy to manage. They turned to Sonance for their highly acclaimed audio solutions.

In the main dining room, Sonance 8” Pendant Speakers were used not only for their best-in-class fidelity and uncompromised sonic performance in 70V/100V, but also for their minimalist design to blend discretely into the environment.

In the private dining room, two pairs of James Loudspeaker Small Aperture® Series speakers were installed and paired with a James Loudspeaker PowerPipe Subwoofer to fill the space with rich, detailed bass frequencies without interfering with the décor and to ensure that top notch technology would enhance this room for private events.

Throughout the waterfront outdoor patio area, over 25 Sonance Mariner 86 Speakers were utilized to not only attract clientele passing by on the surrounding marina, but for their reliability in withstanding the outdoor elements.

The placement of speakers throughout the property provides a consistent and comfortable listening experience to not only set the ambiance, but to also help make each visit nothing short of magical.

OUR MISSION
UNITE YOUR AUDIENCE

Martin Audio delivers signature sound with class leading coverage, consistency and control to truly connect the artist and audience for unforgettable concerts.

The level from the front to the rear of the seating area changes considerably less than with a traditional speaker system, and the tonal quality is significantly more uniform. Knowing that people in the cheap seats are getting the whole mix is so great!

Ken Newman, FOH Engineer

Renowned Sound Systems

Martin Audio was founded to manufacture live performance loudspeakers for the supergroups of the 1970s, allowing such bands as Pink Floyd, The Who and Supertramp to play to larger audiences and be heard properly for the first time.

Since then, Martin Audio has earned a reputation for supplying superb sound systems across the spectrum of sound reinforcement and for a wealth of tours and concerts. Renowned for integrity in design, technical excellence and longevity of its products, Martin Audio offers a comprehensive range of touring speakers suitable for every type of venue, performance and application, with a focus on full frequency sound, control, coverage and consistency.

Event professionals, audio engineers, and touring artists count on Martin Audio for reliability and sound quality show after show.

Yes, I could use another PA system, but I stake my reputation on it never sounding as awesome as this show does with Martin Audio. This system enables you to achieve things that no other system offers.

Simon Honywill, FOH Sound Engineer

Unite Your Audience

Our philosophy of “Unite Your Audience” isn’t just a motto, it’s the guiding principle behind everything we do. Our systems bring our signature sound of clarity and impact with the coverage and consistency that truly connects the fans with the artist’s performance in every seat of the venue.

Class Leading Control, Coverage and Consistency

Since the mid-2000’s Martin Audio has been an innovator in the arena of line array optimisation – the ability to manipulate sound for improved control, coverage and consistency for the benefit of the user and the audience.

Today, our acoustical simulation software provides both highly accurate sound system prediction with the ability optimise the sound against target goals set by the user and the dynamics of the venue. The user specifies exactly what SPL and frequency response is required at various points throughout the venue and intelligent software automatically determines the array configuration and controls the array to produce that result. With such control, both non-audience areas and Hard Avoid® areas ─ such as on stage and beyond the venue perimeter ─ can be programmed in, and vertical coverage can be fine-tuned electronically.

This ensures for the artist, sound engineer, and touring team the confidence that the very best sound deployment possible in any given venue and conditions is achieved.

It is the only system I would consider for this kind of event. In addition to the extremely accurately defined coverage, the Hard Avoid® feature on stage and the incredible cardioid subs meant that we could really meet audience expectations while maintaining the stage quiet and clean.

Phil Wright, FOH Sound Engineer

Not Just For Rock ‘N Roll

Stand-up comedy has a long association with Martin Audio and over the years, along with our rental partners, we’ve helped support artists of the calibre of Lee Evans, Michael McIntyre and Kevin Hart.

High vocal intelligibility and consistency of coverage are paramount in comedy gigs, because if you miss one word the joke’s not funny. Arguably, it’s more important to have even coverage and intelligibility for a comedian than any rock concert you’re ever going to do, because at a rock concert everyone knows the chorus, but in a comedy gig no-one knows what’s coming next.

Martin Audio’s fastidious focus upon mid and high band clarity and projection is legendary and with our optimisation technology even coverage from front to back is an amazing quality to have for speech only shows.

The real challenge with stand-up is that we have to spend more time trying to avoid unwanted reflections whereas music shows can be more forgiving. Fortunately, we can comfortably deal with issues like slapback using the Hard Avoid feature in the software.

Toby Donovan, System Tech

Everyone we have had contact with at Martin Audio has been a pleasure to do business with. They seem genuinely interested in our situation and eager to help and I feel we can develop real one on one relationships. We could not be happier with Martin Audio as a business partner.

Steve Payne, Owner, Soundworks of Virginia, USA

I love this system! It’s great to be back on the Martin Audio gear. It’s a very detailed box and matches the subs perfectly.

ABOUT THE HOME

This minimalistic mountain escape ties in elements of a cozy cabin with the luxurious amenities of a modern home. Careful details are discreetly and purposefully placed throughout the space to enhance the luxury experience.

“The overall design of this house is incredible. There are so many fine details and steps taken to give you a comfortable feeling when you are there and to make it more about the setting and less about the house itself.”

   –  Igor Reoutt, Custom Integrator

THE CHALLENGE

Having a home that is rich with unique features while maintaining a clean and minimalistic aesthetic was important to the homeowner, which lead them to Ryan Group Architects. This Truckee, California based architectural design studio makes it their mission to “shape architecture & interiors that influence the way people live.”

Designing a space where every element has its place and purpose, RGA focused on every painstaking detail to ensure an elevated experience. Understanding that those details include lighting, audio, and other technical elements, the homeowner turned to technology design expert, Igor Reoutt.

The custom integrator believes that a home’s environment impacts the inhabitants’ mood, energy, and overall well being. By selecting products with minimalistic design and premium performance, while ensuring that every aspect of the system is easy to operate, the integrator was able to introduce the perfect solutions in harmony with the overall design goals for the team at RGA and the homeowner.

METHODOLOGY

The custom integrator selected lighting and audio hardware with matching trim and finish to minimize their appearance throughout the home. Lucifer lighting was selected along with Sonance Architectural Series Discreet Opening speakers. To bring the technology to life and keep the system easy to use, the integrator specified Lutron Palladiom keypads with Sonance TRUFIG mounting technology for a flush keypad aesthetic, and IPORT Surface Mount for mounted iPad touch panel control. Pulling together the audio, video, and lighting, they programmed the home control system to be simply controlled from any iPad docked at LAUNCH BaseStations and in IPORT Surface Mount locations throughout the home.

BEYOND EXPECTATION

“Sonance Architectural Series Discreet Opening System was a great feature. We were able to use Sonance DSP amplifiers to power the speaker systems which gave us the ability to calibrate the audio to the unique acoustics of the home. It’s tuned so it doesn’t echo through the house.”

– Igor Reoutt, Custom Integrator

RESULTS

This beautiful mountain escape doesn’t miss a single detail. Everything comes together in harmony to provide a luxurious experience that enhances the overall environment and feeling of being in the home.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT

The Discreet Opening System is an optimized speaker layout of four or more AS38RS Satellite Speakers and bandpass subwoofers tucked into the ceiling to achieve breathtaking sound quality. Their 4” discreet opening and flush finish matches many elegant downlighting to make the speakers and light blend into the ceiling surface and virtually disappear. The Sonance Architectural Series finish is achieved using TRUFIG mounting technology, a reliable and repeatable installation process that provides precision placement and finish to support the finest interior designs.

APPLE MILL

APPLE MILL

ABOUT ARTIFEX

The Apple Mill project is a mixed-use commercial building in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada: an up and coming, “transit-oriented, green, and people-focused downtown.” The building at 100 New Park Pl can be accessed from Apple Mill Rd or New Park Pl and hosts a bank, a financial services tax and auditing company, a Harley-Davidson office, and a parking structure. It also features common spaces, including a shared outdoor space located on the main level for business colleagues to use at their leisure.

THE CHALLENGE

This property is operated by SmartCentres, a commercial developer and operator based in Vaughan, ON. The company has over 283 shopping centers, with a majority of those featuring their largest client, Walmart. SmartCentres is now developing increasingly popular mixed-use buildings, like the one at Apple Mill Rd. Deploying an outdoor audio solution for the shared outdoor space was the focus for this project. The combination of extreme weather, traffic noise, and ongoing construction created a need for high performance, high quality outdoor audio from durable speakers.

We had researched many different products and in speaking with Ed Lockyer from SC Media, Ed suggested looking into James Loudspeaker. After researching, we made it our mission to go with their custom Wedge speakers.” – John Wiszniewski, ESA Communications, Ltd.

REQUIREMENTS

The goal for this outdoor venue was to create a space where people wanted to gather. The harsh environment during the winter months meant finding an audio solution that could withstand the elements. In addition, the system needed to provide even, balanced coverage throughout large spaces and play at a comfortable volume to encourage conversation and relaxation.

METHODOLOGY

ESA Communications Ltd., a leading commercial integrator covering the Province of Ontario, Canada and the Caribbean Region, was able to bring an innovative solution to the table for this project. The task was to take a lifeless outdoor space in a busy business complex and bring it to life. People needed a reason to use the space as it was intended, to relax, have conversation, and enjoy the sunshine when weather permitted. By using James Loudspeaker audio solutions customized to blend into the architecture, the area was soon transformed by the addition of music playing comfortably in the background, promoting conversation and overall enjoyment of the public space.

RESULT

James Loudspeaker’s talented team of craftsmen and engineers was able to design custom speakers perfectly suited to meet the needs of this commercial project. What was once an under-utilized outdoor area was brought to life with comfortable audio that made it welcoming and functional. The positioning and placement of the speakers allowed for this magical experience with the audio seeming to emanate from all around.

THE DELLA & SENG GEE GUILD HALL, PART OF THE KENT RIDGE GUILD HOUSE OF THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE SOCIETY (NUSS)

PRODUCTS USED

  • 6 x iMAG THUNDER TH2001EWP Wall plate 4K AVoIP encoder
  • 1 x iMAG THUNDER TH2001E 4K AVoIP encoder
  • 5 x iMAG THUNDER TH2002D 4K AVoIP decoder
  • 1 x iMAG THUNDER TH900DS DIRECTOR

The Kent Ridge Guild House is the largest of the three guild houses managed by the National University of Singapore Society (NUSS). It offers a plethora of facilities including a fitness centre, a swimming pool, squash and tennis courts, restaurants, bar, karaoke room, and billiard and function rooms. Situated within the NUS campus, it is a great place to unwind and meet up with fellow friends and graduates.

It has been over 10 years since the last AV upgrade at the Kent Ridge Guild House, and so whilst many restrictions were in place due to COVID-19, the Management Committee decided to make use of the window of opportunity to upgrade the AV system at the Della & Seng Gee Guild Hall, the main ballroom, to provide members and guests with a stylish and elegant ballroom for corporate and private events.

Sylvester Fok of Media Systems has worked with the Kent Ridge Guild House team for many years and so Media Systems was chosen as the trusted system integrator to design and implement the system. The team was looking for something future-proof, simple to operate, reliable and within the stipulated budget. For the video matrix and distribution system they turned to iMAGsystems to provide the AV over IP system for the venue. iMAG’s Thunder 1g AV over IP system was chosen as the right solution using 6 Wall plate encoders, 1 standard encoder and 5 decoders creating a 7×5 video matrix and complete flexibility for the in-house AV team.

Once the Media Systems team started to implement the system, they started to experiment with iMAG’s new CONTROL UI, which is a full touch screen control system built into the Director software in Thunder. Once they realised how simple and quick it was to programme, they decided to replace the inhouse control system with iMAGsystems and have a full system implementation.

iMAG’s CONTROL UI enables the operators to control lighting, audio, screens, and projectors all from the touch screens in the venue. One touch screen is positioned in the main ballroom, and a second in the control room. Any user can plug into one of the 6 HDMI inputs around the room, whether it is operating as one large room, or two separate function rooms when the centre partition is in place.

Gerry Raffaut, President of iMAGsystems, commented on the system, “It is great to work with Media Systems and NUSS on this project. Media Systems was one of the first system integrators to implement our new CONTROL UI software and it worked perfectly. Sylvester and his programmers provided great feedback and we added in a couple of features they required to make the installation run seamlessly. It was a great partnership. Big thanks to NUSS and Media Systems for putting their trust in iMAGsystems”

Sylvester Fok, MD of Media Systems commented, “We have been working closely with NUSS and the Kent Ridge Guild House team for many years, it was an honour to be asked to look after this project. iMAG’s Thunder system worked well, and the CONTROL UI touch screen software enabled us to meet the budget whilst ensuring no compromises were made on the client’s requirements. Big thanks to the iMAG team in Australia, and the Generation AV team here in Singapore.”

With an open floor plan and functional layout, Centro is able to customize every aspect of each gathering to create tailored and memorable experiences for their guests.

THE CHALLENGE

With a growing demand for corporate gathering spaces in Austin, the team behind Centro Event Space knew that they wanted to create a space that would not only be aesthetically pleasing, but also incorporated the highest quality, yet easy to use, audio system that would set them apart from other event locations. With numerous zones throughout the property, and a 14-foot video wall in the main event space, the challenge was to deliver high quality sound at consistent sound levels throughout the premises, while ensuring volume levels were comfortable to listen to in any location. The space was also purposefully built with modern finishes that could easily transform from a corporate event space in the day to a cocktail and catering lounge in the evening depending on the demands of the client. It was essential that any speaker that was installed blend in with the design of the space to maintain that top notch aesthetic and almost disappear. With a very specific vision, and a desire for high-quality audio to elevate their space, the team at Centro reached out to Felix Media Solutions, one of the fastest growing commercial audio and video solutions integrators in Austin, to bring their vision to life.

Plus, our customers love them. When you walk into Centro, you truly don’t even notice the speakers because they blend right in with the design of the space.”

– Mike Watts Vice President of Design, Felix Media Solutions Inc.

Optional black square grille adapters were used to allow the speakers to blend aesthetically into the painted roof tiles. 8” Surface Mount Speakers were used on the patio with an IPX4 weatherproof construction that ensures reliability when installed outdoors. The consistent voicing across the Sonance Professional Series range ensures seamless integration of sound when moving from inside to outside.

SOUTH SHORES CHURCH

SOUTH SHORES CHURCH

ABOUT SOUTH SHORES CHURCH

Located just half of a mile from the famous Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point, California, South Shores Church has been serving Southern California coastal communities for over 60 years. With panoramic views of the ocean, Saddleback Mountain, and surrounding city lights, and a campus built on six acres of land, South Shores Church is the home to a 584-seat sanctuary, with additional rooms dedicated to adult and children’s ministry meeting spaces, additional fellowship rooms, staff offices, and an outdoor deck overlooking the ocean.

THE CHALLENGE

With a growing church congregation, and spaces that were built as early as 1960, the team at South Shores Church knew that they needed to renovate and expand their property to not only welcome more people to their campus, but to also modernize the experience to create a connection with people from the moment they stepped out of their car. Musical worship was also an increasing priority for the church which contributed to their desire to enhance acoustics throughout the entire property as part of the renovation. With no audio in the outdoor spaces of the church, and a need to improve audio quality for band-style worship inside of the main sanctuary, the team at South Shores Church needed to find an audio solution with common voicing in multiple form factors for the indoor and outdoor spaces. As the team dreamt up their ultimate audio solution for the newly renovated campus, the Coronavirus pandemic quickly impacted the vision and emphasis on enhancing their outdoor space. With less people spending time inside of the main sanctuary due to new regulations, investing in evenly distributed outdoor audio would allow people to worship and enjoy the live music experience from anywhere on the grounds. With a very broad vision, and a desire for high-quality audio to elevate their campus, the team at South Shores Church turned to Sonance to bring their vision to life.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Find an audio solution with common voicing to connect with people from the moment they get out of their cars, to entering the foyer and main sanctuary
  • Best-in-class fidelity and uncompromised sonic performance in 70V/100V applications
  • Weatherproof outdoor-rated audio solution that can withstand the elements

METHODOLOGY

Professional audio integration is more than merely filling a space with sound. It’s a tangible design element and a critical part of the space’s environment that is meant to create a mood and elevate the senses without distracting from the designer’s vision and aesthetic goals. For over 30 years, the architectural speaker pioneers at Sonance have continually explored and refined the fine art of musical fidelity within a designed space, with their series of award-winning in-wall and in-ceiling speakers.

RESULT

From the parking lot, to the planters lining the entrance of the property and the rafters supporting the roof, the South Shores Church outdoor installation consists of a combination of 4.5” and 6.5” Landscape Series Satellite speakers, 12” and 15” Landscape Series Subwoofers, two omnidirectional 70V/100V OMNI-6T speakers, and a variety of Surface Mount Woofers. The weatherproof construction of the products safeguards the speakers against moisture and other outdoor elements. Sonance’s broad offering of outdoor products and form factors also allowed the South Shores team to fill varying landscapes with full range sound while retaining common voicing space to space.

In the main foyer, Sonance Professional Series In-Ceiling speakers were installed to ensure a consistent continuum of sound was had from the outdoor spaces to indoors. To control the audio, IPORT LUXE was installed in the control booth to run the dLive MixPad mixing tool software that pairs with the Allen & Heath mixing system. The ability to use an iPad as a mobile mixing unit has enabled the audio staff to keep tabs on audio performance across all zones, inside and outside, during live services. And to ensure all systems run smoothly and clearly, the SonAmp DSP 2-750 was installed to optimize performance across all speakers. The placement of speakers throughout the property provides an impactful and consistent experience to ensure people can enjoy worship services from anywhere on the property, which is particularly important today, as congregation members can social distance outdoors while enjoying the sermon and the surrounding ocean views.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT
