To help make Jun’s an even more enjoyable and attractive and a “must visit” Dubai dining experience,
the restaurant selected key regional AV specialist Venuetech to design, supply and install the venue’s
entire new audio system.

Ismat Assafiri, Systems Architect and Audio Specialist at Venuetech explained that the system was designed to deliver music to all main restaurant dining areas, including an outdoor area, and needed to be flexible enough for a DJ (or bongo player!) to easily operate.

Understanding that the restaurant was looking to achieve good quality sound distribution within a flexible system, Assafiri and his team chose four LEA Professional 704 Network Connect Series amplifiers to cover the entire space. The restaurant encompasses three audio zones, two indoor and one outdoor —which presented some acoustical challenges for the team.

“The venue has high ceilings and reflective materials so we needed to be very considerate when it came to loudspeaker placement,” explained Assafiri.

One of the restaurant’s requests was to have a flexible system that, if needed, would allow them to eventually transition the space into a nightclub. Considering this, Venuetech’s team confirmed it was confident that the amps from LEA would be flexible enough and have enough headroom to accommodate the future expansion without needing to add more amps.

“The Connect Series amplifiers provide us with everything we need, from the intuitive user interface, the SPL headroom, to the ability to integrate with an endless list of loudspeaker manufacturers,” said Assafiri.

Casa De Campo Resort and Villas in La Romana is known for attracting a high-profile celebrity clientele. With its gated community, panoramic ocean views, and wide-ranging amenities, the resort provides both the security and luxury these guests require. Casa De Campo, which opened almost 50 years ago, was the first resort of this type in the Dominican Republic.

Systems integrator Musitempo was called upon by an owner of one of the resort’s largest villas, seeking a new, powerful, dynamic audio system for their entire home. The villa owners, who were long-time customers of Musitempo, demanded not only high-quality performance from a system, but also a system that would not interfere with their aesthetics. 

With over 25 years of experience, Musitempo is a leading AV provider in the Dominican Republic. The company represents a range of prominent equipment brands as well as classical and popular musical instruments. Musitempo specializes in the design, installation, programming and automation of commercial and home audio and lighting systems.

For this project, Musitempo knew immediately that LEA amplifiers would meet all the requirements. The company had worked with many LEA Professional executives over the years, so when LEA was established, the switch to the new amplifier technology company was a no-brainer.

“After over 15 years as an active AV integrator, designer and system tuner, LEA Definitely has become my go-to amplifier brand,” said Fernando Hernandez Voigt, CTO at Musitempo.

“It provides me with everything I need from the power it delivers, the ease of programming, and the convenience of remote-monitoring with the Cloud platform, is it now my first choice when it comes to most of my installs.“

One of the main challenges of this installation was that the client wanted to use a particular brand and model of loudspeaker which do not offer built-in transformers. Musitempo had to search for suitable external transformers for the villa project, but the connectivity flexibility of the LEA amps simplified the project.

“Since this is such a large installation, we had to mix between Hi-Z and Low-Z cable runs, but with LEA’s Connect Series this was literally a piece of cake,” commented Voigt. 

Ultimately the team at Musitempo chose four LEA Connect Series Amplifiers, two Connect 168 and two Connect 704 which power 80 Bowers and Wilkins speakers.

The LEA Professional Connect Series is powering all areas of the villa including the lobby areas, kitchen, pantry, dining room, indoor garden, living room, pool, BBQ area, fire pit, gazebo area and 8 bedrooms. 

While this large install was underway, the team had to contend with the ever-present threat of COVID lockdowns in the region. To combat this, the Musitempo team was grateful for the LEA Professional Cloud Platform ensuring they could still access the system without being on site. 

“The LEA Cloud Platform allows us to make tunings and adjustments without the need of being physically at the venue,” commented Voigt. “This really helps us provide a level of service that would have been impossible if it wasn’t for LEA.”

Sounin Development installs range of HH Electronics loudspeakers at prestigious new police HQ building in Phnom Penh…

The inauguration of the new administrative headquarters for the Phnom Penh Municipal Police Comissariat took place recently in the Cambodian capital. The Deputy Prime Minister, senators and members of the National Assembly were all present to see the culmination of a three-year project to deliver the ten-storey construction, which was completed at a cost of US$14 million. Comprising multiple rooms across 20,000 square feet, the facility required high quality audio reinforcement for its many meeting and conference spaces, which include designated International Meeting and Conference Rooms.

After careful consideration, experienced AV consultant and integrator Sounin Development GP Co.,Ltd of Phnom Penh was engaged to design, supply, and install the system. After consultation with leading distribution partner Fast Technologies, AV engineer Sounin Chann chose a variety of HH Electronics loudspeakers to meet the comprehensive brief.

HH TNi-W6 6.5-inch passive surface mount wall speakers featured prominently, with 32 units installed across four rooms on level 8, with a further 8 each for the International Meeting and Conference Rooms respectively on levels 9 and 10. A total of 100 x 8-inch HH TNi-W8 surface mount wall speakers covered rooms on 5 floors (20 per floor) with the scheme completed by the deployment of 100 x HH TNi-C8 8-inch ceiling speakers across a further 5 floors (20 per floor).

The school’s Performing Arts department hosts everything from plays and musicals to ensemble performances, solo instrument recitals, and vocal/choir and spoken word performances. The main theater has seating for about 200. There are also large classrooms on each side of the theater that can hold an additional 100 each. When needed, the airwalls between the theater and the classrooms can be opened up to accommodate an audience of about 400, making the Tumwater High School the largest venue in the school district.

Tumwater-based CCI Solutions are experts in sound and visual technology. The company has 40 years of experience helping people be seen and be heard throughout the US. CCI Solutions has designed and implemented over 1000 projects in church, corporate, government, and public facilities.

Mark Pearson, from national AVL systems integration company, CCI Solutions, served as the Project Lead for the Tumwater installation. Pearson explained that the main space and each side classroom space has its own sound system, but they also needed to work together for larger performances. The main space also required an update of its stage monitor amplification. The high school predominantly uses passive line array elements and monitor enclosures from Martin Audio.

“Months ago, we had specified amps from a different manufacturer for this project, but they weren’t able to deliver, so our rep firm recommended LEA amps, and it has turned out to be a great experience,” said Pearson. “Van Browne from Brownestone sent us some sample LEA amps to play with, our whole team just kind of fell in love with them. It’s always great to discover a high-quality, new product line that fits well into your offerings.”

To cover the spaces adequately, Pearson and the CCI team used a mix of four different Network Connect Series amplifiers from LEA Professional. The system solution included ten individual channels of monitoring ability (a single Connect 352 and two Connect 354 amps), allowing the high school to cover the stage monitoring, but also room to place speakers off stage to support special effects or to power additional floor monitors for larger groups. They also now have a four-channel 2 unit (four zones of 70 Volt with a Connect 84 amp) handling the back of house paging and stage manager announcements. And each side classroom has its own Connect 702 amplifier.

“These amps have an impressive list of features we really like,” added Pearson. “They’re networkable and controlled via IP addresses so we can easily access them with an app, and then the ability to have internal DSP in the amp for detailed speaker tunings; and then I also like that they’re GPI controllable and the side rooms can be turned on or off depending on the users need.”

To simplify the use process, Pearson set up the amps with a series of relays. If one relay is opened up, then the GPI triggers and powers up the amps. They have four relays in use — two for each amplifier. One relay is controlled off the DSP for the main house, and then another relay is controlled from a touch panel in each classroom. If students need to turn on the system for a classroom, they can now power on the system with a single touch, which opens a relay. With a single touch, the amplifiers power-up, a projection screen is lowered, and a protector is turned on — everything is ready to go.

“Because of delivery issues, this was a spec swap, but the high school ended up with a much better amplifier and a more robust system,” added Pearson. “Which is why we as a company are basically moving away from the other company to all LEA Amp solutions for this type of application and many more.”

Potvin did need to fix one issue in the hotel after the installation but was able to use the LEA Professional Web UI so he never had to step foot in the AV room. The Web App UI is LEA Professional’s browser-based interface which allows local monitoring of every amplifier connected to the network from any phone, tablet, or PC. In addition, it will enable users to view the status of every channel on any given amp. This alongside the remote control LEA Cloud platform, ensures the integrator, in this case, Potvin is in complete control of the system at all times.

Because of the pandemic and the summer break, the system has not yet been used for a full performance, but the high school is very anxious to get the system in use soon. The team ran several sound tests with various configurations, and everyone is very happy with the quality and headroom of the amplifiers.

“The installation was really smooth; we didn’t have any hurdles. That’s another plus for LEA, everything is very self-explanatory, and you don’t have to be an engineer to walk through the process to program things and get things up and running; it’s all very straightforward and logical,” said Pearson. “The amps themselves have a good user interface, and the app is beneficial. We had one question about the relays and the GPI interface we weren’t sure about, so we called LEA, and we had
our answer instantly. They were great to work with. I look forward to many more installations with LEA.”

Founded in London in 1971, the Hard Rock Cafe now operates 253 locations worldwide. The unique and beloved brand is known for displaying iconic and historic rock instruments and clothing from the likes of John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, and Elvis Presley. Hard Rock Cafe Verona, the company’s newest location, is a spectacular music lover’s destination, featuring four indoor dining areas each with a different motif, an outdoor area with seating for 280, a music museum, and walls throughout the facility filled with objects treasured by generations of music fans.

To live up to its global reputation as the home for Rock ‘n’ Roll, franchise partners at Hard Rock Cafe Verona needed a system of highly reliable, very flexible, and excellent sounding audio amplifiers. The system would be called upon to deliver the music to all main restaurant dining areas, the memorabilia museum, and the outdoor patio area. The system would also power the cafe’s stage, which is used for special announcements, presentations, and live music performances.

Davide Gaiardoni, Partner and Sound Engineer, at AV integration firm Marini Music Service, was the lead system designer for the project. Gaiardoni first heard of LEA Professional amplifier solutions as a recommendation from local distributor Audiosales. Understanding that the Hard Rock Cafe expected the very best in performance and usability possible, Gaiardoni researched the amplifiers, saw that LEA met or exceeded his specification requirements, and decided to give the Connect Series amplifiers a try.

The team at Marini Music Service selected a set of five LEA Professional Dante Connect Series amplifiers, four 354D amplifiers, and one 704D amplifier to power all eight of the restaurant’s audio zones — the seven background music zones and the live stage.

With 268 rooms and suites spread over 14 floors and a pool nestled within a botanical oasis in L.A.’s most dynamic neighborhood, Hotel Figueroa, part of the Hyatt group, is renowned for its style and close proximity to the Crypto.com Arena and L.A. Live, formerly known as Staples Centre, making it the ideal destination for travelers.

Drp is a low-voltage cabling contractor based in Los Angeles, California. For over 10 years the company has been a leader in providing fast, professional, cost-effective solutions from cabling to security to audio and video systems.

“This was a challenging big project; when we arrived on site we quickly realized it wouldn’t just be about installing a new system. We needed to re-do the infrastructure already in place,”

said Dan Potvin, Founder and Owner at Drp.inc.

“When we first inspected the old system and pulled out the rack it looked like a spider’s web back there. There was no signal wire but data infrastructure wire, so the system was not secure. We had to fix that first before we could even think about installing the LEA amps.”

Potvin focused on a few main areas of the hotel including two prominent restaurants, Sparrow and La Casita as well as the pool area. Initially, the team came up against supply chain issues with some manufacturers not having amplifiers in stock. This led them to try LEA Professional which had amplifiers in stock and ready to ship. At first, Potvin admitted to being nervous about trying a new manufacturer but after seeing some familiar faces on LEA’s team he knew immediately that this was no start-up company but instead a firm with long-standing industry heavyweights on board. Ultimately Potvin specified four Connect Series 704 amplifiers to power a majority of the hotel.

“Going in with these amps and being able to program one channel to be 70V and one channel to be low impedance, that is huge,” said Potvin. “These have so many useful features, they are very unique within the industry, and that really makes my job easier.”

Adding to the legacy infrastructure at the hotel were the equipment racks, which were not typical audio system racks but instead, IT racks that could not hold much equipment. For Potvin, the Connect Series and its 1U space-saving design meant they were the perfect fit. One challenge the team usually faces when installing amplifiers in a hotel is ensuring that they are not accidentally powered off, especially when they need to run 24/7.

“I’m so glad the on/off button is hidden on the Connect Series, we have had so many issues before where the power button is right on the front of an amp and people accidentally hit the amps off,” said Potvin. “It seems simple, but that can be a real nightmare scenario for us.”

Potvin did need to fix one issue in the hotel after the installation but was able to use the LEA Professional Web UI so he never had to step foot in the AV room. The Web App UI is LEA Professional’s browser-based interface which allows local monitoring of every amplifier connected to the network from any phone, tablet, or PC. In addition, it will enable users to view the status of every channel on any given amp. This alongside the remote control LEA Cloud platform, ensures the integrator, in this case, Potvin is in complete control of the system at all times.

“The first time a DJ was performing the mix was boosted 8-12db and those frequencies will knock you off your chair. I went down to fix it but didn’t even need to open my laptop. Instead, I logged on with my phone’s web browser and I was able to take the low end out in 20 seconds.”

Some areas of the hotel, particularly Sparrow restaurant, were acoustically challenging in terms of their configuration but Potvin was impressed with the power LEA Professional provided.

“Four LEA amps are powering the majority of the hotel and it’s mind-boggling, especially when you see how much audio is in there — it can get very loud,” commented Potvin. “The result was crisp, clear, non-distorted sound quality, even at high levels… it’s very protective of the speakers in the system and easy on an audience.”

In the future, Potvin will be renovating other areas of the hotel and adding more LEA Professional amplifiers to the system. 

“I mean, in a sense, it was a godsend that there were shipping issues and problems with other manufacturers getting products because it meant I found LEA and I’ve been using them on all my projects since. In an environment where the amplifiers will be on 24/7, I would only use LEA Professional.”

The MAW Gallery

mero concepts is a boutique residential and commercial A/V integration firm based in Cedar Park, a suburb of Austin, TX. As Founder/CEO Marc Oliveri explained, mero concepts has earned a reputation for carefully considering every detail on behalf of each client, from using the finest products to installation and maintenance procedures leading to best possible outcomes for their clients. This was the case when addressing the needs of The MAW Gallery, a newly constructed space dedicated to the presentation of select fine arts in Austin, TX.

TREPIDATIONS

Initially, the project included data systems, security and cameras—but no audio. After looking at the plans, Oliveri thoughtfully offered some options for a discreet audio solution based upon the customization capabilities of James Loudspeaker. “We have worked with the team at James Loudspeaker for years serving our client’s homes, and their ability to accommodate the needs of each project with custom solutions really gives us an edge in the marketplace.” The gallery owner agreed to the A/V system based on the stipulation that “it had to blend in.”

OPTIMIZED POWER

Oliveri and his talented crew deployed a Control4 solution for the user interface and as an entertainment source in the gallery, and featured their music streamer along with an Apple TV—routing video content to a single Sony 77-inch OLED display, used mostly for classes and Q&A sessions with world-renowned artists as well as content from the Art Legacy Live app. Power to the eight pairs of speakers comes from an AudioControl Director® Model M6800 16-channel amplifier, delivering 200 watts per channel (into 4-ohm speakers as used here) from a sleek, 2U chassis. “We selected the AudioControl amplifier because it has superior power and performance, it has available drivers for Control4 interface and because of the M6800’s onboard DSP that contains profiles for many architectural speaker brands including James Loudspeaker. This saved us considerable time dialing in each zone to sound optimal.”

DEFINING CUSTOMIZATION

Oliveri came up with a strategy for concealing the source of the sound throughout the gallery, suspending James Loudspeaker PD620.4 6.5-inch two-way pendant speakers from the ceiling. But his clever strategy also included custom conduit containing the speaker wire and suspending each pendant—which the team at James Loudspeaker manufactured for him to specification. Oliveri then Equipment rack featuring AudioControl Director Model M6800 amplifier James Loudspeaker PD620.4 pendant speaker acquired paint from the same source that had supplied the gallery’s painters and shipped it to the James Loudspeaker factory, where the speakers and sections of conduit were meticulously finished for a perfect décor match. So impressed was the gallery owner with the custom paint work, the team at mero concepts proceeded to disassemble all of the alarm and camera parts as well as the Wi-Fi access point covers, shipping a container full of small bits to also be custom painted. “We were already quite impressed with the products and services offered by James Loudspeaker, but to custom paint our array of miscellaneous parts from other manufacturers really speaks to how dedicated this company is to their dealers,” Oliveri stated.

SPEAKER SPECIFICS

The gallery audio system featured 12 of the James Loudspeaker PD620.4 speakers plus a pair of custom painted FXCQ620S in-ceiling speakers in the reception area and each restroom. The PD620.4 was engineered for a wide variety of applications including high open-ceiling environments such as The MAW Gallery. Featuring a 6.5-inch aluminum cone woofer and a 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter, the PD620.4 has excellent efficiency, dispersion, durability and power handling. Loudspeakers were selected, delivering superb sound from a 6.5-inch aluminum cone woofer with a Santoprene® surround mated to the legendary James Loudspeaker Quad-Tweeter Array, featuring four aluminum ¾-inch aluminum dome tweeters angled precisely in a 22.5° offset array for wide dispersion, high power handling and low distortion. The materials used in these speakers make them ideally suited to high-humidity areas such as these gallery restrooms. The enclosures of both the PD620.4 and the FXCQ620S are constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum.

When all was said and done, the client was thrilled with the outcome. Not Just For Rock ‘N Roll

Stand-up comedy has a long association with Martin Audio and over the years, along with our rental partners, we’ve helped support artists of the calibre of Lee Evans, Michael McIntyre and Kevin Hart.

High vocal intelligibility and consistency of coverage are paramount in comedy gigs, because if you miss one word the joke’s not funny. Arguably, it’s more important to have even coverage and intelligibility for a comedian than any rock concert you’re ever going to do, because at a rock concert everyone knows the chorus, but in a comedy gig no-one knows what’s coming next.

Martin Audio’s fastidious focus upon mid and high band clarity and projection is legendary and with our optimisation technology even coverage from front to back is an amazing quality to have for speech only shows.

The real challenge with stand-up is that we have to spend more time trying to avoid unwanted reflections whereas music shows can be more forgiving. Fortunately, we can comfortably deal with issues like slapback using the Hard Avoid feature in the software.
