Power Amplifier Setup For Small Venues | Using Hi-Z & Low-Z

Power Amplifier Setup For Small Venues: Using Hi-Z & Lo-Z

The CONNECTSERIES amplifiers offer Low-Z, Hi-Z 70V, and Hi-Z 100V operation individually selectable per channel.  This comes in very handy in a wide variety of applications as it allows for the most flexibility in powering speaker systems with fewer amplifier models needed. Let’s take a look at some power amplifier setups using a small sports bar as an example:

All Low-Z

In this diagram all channels are set to Low-Z.  Each channel can have a different amount of speakers and can drive different impedance loads on every channel.  When determining what amp to power the speakers with, it is important to look at the AES or continuous rating of the loudspeaker.  Typically 1.5 to 2 times this power rating will allow for the full output potential of the speaker to be reached with program material but always check with the speaker manufacturer for recommended amplifier power.

All Hi-Z 70V/100V

Here, all channels are set to Hi-Z.  Transformer tap settings are listed below the speaker diagrams with totals from all speakers connected to that channel.  It is good practice to keep 20% headroom with regards to power, to allow for full output potential of the speaker.  With 160W available per channel, maintaining 20% headroom would mean the sum total of all loudspeakers on that channel shouldn’t exceed 128W.

Mixed Low-Z and Hi-Z 70V/100V

This shows the full potential of the amplifier being able to drive each channel as desired with a mix of Low-Z and Hi-Z speakers on the same amplifier.  In addition to this, Channel 2 has subwoofers on it which may require more power than the speakers on the other channels.  Smart Power Bridge is enabled on this channel which doubles the power from 350W to 700W on this channel.  Now a higher power amplifier isn’t required just for the subwoofers, they are properly powered on the same amplifier as the rest of the speakers.

MARTIN AUDIO JAPAN MOVES OUTDOORS FOR PREVIOUSLY POSTPONED WP SERIES DEMO

Martin Audio Japan (MAJ) recently staged an outdoor showcase demo at the ancient ruins of the Ama Site Park in Takatsuki, Osaka.

This park was newly opened in 2021, having refurbished the land that was previously used as a university campus. Now the park is open to everyone.

Martin Audio Japan had been unable to hold any demo showcases over the last 18 months due to COVID19 restrictions. Once the pandemic calmed down the company restarted its activity programme—and planned something special.

Director of MAJ, Sam Yamashita, explained the rationale. “Holding the demonstration outside ensured there would be sufficient space for the social distancing as well as fresh air. We had originally wanted to introduce WPL to customers back in 2019, but due to COVID it was postponed.”

In any case, he concluded that showing the capability of WPL to its optimum potential in the previous theatre context may not have been the best solution. “WPL has long throw capabilities that could not be properly evaluated in a theatre. So, I had the idea that by holding the demonstration outdoors, it would solve both social distancing issues and give us the space to evaluate this powerful system to its full potential.”

The event was extremely successful with more than 50 people in attendance. Everyone was smiling with satisfaction as they auditioned both the WPS and WPL arrays.

The MAJ crew knew that everybody had been frustrated by the COVID situation and wanted to listen to the music loud. “Having them enjoy the music so much was a pleasure for the MAJ team as well,” acknowledged Yamashita.

Amplifiers For Restaurants and Bars | AV Solutions From LEA Professional

The first impression of a restaurant or bar is usually the visual aesthetics. But the second impression, will likely be heard and not seen. That’s why amplifiers for restaurants and bars are critical to creating not only a comfortable guest experience – but also, an intuitive and reliable experience for venue owners, staff, operators, and the AV system integrators who install and service the system.

Smart amplifiers provide the power, flexibility, reliability, dependability, and ease of use that no other professional amplifier product can deliver.

Let’s dive into the details.

FLEXIBLE AUDIO DISTRIBUTION

AMPLIFIERS FOR RESTAURANTS AND BARS | AV SOLUTIONS FROM LEA PROFESSIONAL

From small sports bar setups to larger multi-zoned restaurant systems, amplifiers for restaurants and bars need to have the flexibility to encompass a variety of venue sizes and power requirements.

Smart amps have the configuration flexibility to customize the power output and signal routing to fit virtually any venue.

An important feature that makes that possible is Low-Z, Hi-Z 70V, and Hi-Z 100V operation individually selectable per channel.

This feature gives integrators the ability to design systems that can evenly distribute low-voltage audio throughout different zones such as dining rooms, restrooms, patios, and bars and still reserve enough power to configure zones such as performance stages and dance floors with higher-powered sub requirements.

Here’s an example of how these types of systems could look:

DSL STRENGTHENS ITS MARTIN AUDIO PORTFOLIO WITH WPL AND TORUS

Since being set up in the early 1980s by brothers Ad and Gert-Jan Gomes, DSL Geluids- & Lichtverhuur has grown steadily into a full-service supplier of sound and lighting in the Netherlands.

The wide range of productions serviced by the company—ranging from dance to pop and from business events to theatre productions—requires equipment that can be widely deployed, with Martin Audio systems occupying a prominent place within the DSL warehouse.

Recently they added two further Martin Audio speaker systems to their inventory: a WPL high output line array and a TORUS constant curvature array, supplied by Dutch distributor Ampco Flashlight Sales from Utrecht.

WE ARE DELIGHTED WITH OUR CHOICE OF MARTIN AUDIO AND CAN SAY WITH PRIDE THAT WE ARE PART OF THE MARTIN AUDIO FAMILY

Ad Gomes, DSL Geluids-

Explaining the reasons for these acquisitions, Gert-Jan Gomes stated, “After the earlier purchase of the WPC system—the successor to the old W8LC—it made sense to move up to the optimum WPL, since larger festivals simply place higher demands on the sound.

“With double 12″ for the low end, two 6.5″ mid drivers for the total vocal spectrum and three 1″ drivers for the high end, in a fully horn-loaded cabinet, this system delivers an impressively high SPL. And thanks to the associated optimisation software, we are able to generate the correct distribution characteristics and sound experience for every event.”

The crystal-clear reproduction, together with the even coverage that we were already familiar with from the MLA series, were the deciding factors, he added. “With the addition of WPL to our current Martin Audio range, we can now service every event with sound—whether small or large scale. We will use WPL at the larger festivals, dance events and concerts.”

The TORUS systems have widespread application potential, he continued, “and we will regularly see them at clubs, corporate events and theatres.”

Meanwhile, his brother Ad has a similarly positive outlook. “We are delighted with our choice of Martin Audio and can say with pride that we are part of the Martin Audio family. The selection of these two new systems once again confirms our faith in the brand.

“Now onto making some beautiful productions with these components!”

MONARQUE MAINTAINS ATLAS GROUP’S CONTINUED SUCCESS WITH MARTIN AUDIO

Baltimore-based Dynamic Sound Level has undertaken numerous projects with the Atlas Restaurant Group over the years—not only in their native city but also Houston, Florida and Washington DC. On each occasion, Martin Audio has been their preferred audio system.

The same has been true of their latest project, right on their own doorstep, in Baltimore’s Harbor East neighbourhood. Set in the historic Bagby Furniture Building, Monarque is a new 135-seat French Steakhouse, designed to showcase the city’s best performers—ranging from poets, actors and musicians to contortionists and even sword swallowers live on stage.

Dynamic Sound Level director, Mike Denoe, explained that the ideal loudspeaker needed to reflect such performance versatility. “We needed a speaker that would work well, not only for background music, but for live music, singers and spoken word. We felt the CDD series was the perfect fit.”

In his selection he had the confidence of a man who has been specifying Martin Audio systems for many years.

THE CDD SERIES SOUNDS GREAT RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX

Mike Denoe, Dynamic Sound Level

… “as far back as when the AQ series was around,” he confirms. “The CDD series sounds great right out of the box, with little EQ needed. It is an extremely versatile, clean looking box, which looks great in any venue and virtually disappears into the setting.”

In order to be discreet, the three CDD8 and pair of CDD10 selected needed to be custom finished in a RAL clay brown, as specified by the architect. Martha Callaghan from Martin Audio North America helped guide the project ream through the painting process.

The CDD10s were underpinned at the stage with a pair of SX212 (2 x 12”) subs recessed into the wall, while the CDD8’s served the main dining area. A pair of Blackline XP12 were also supplied for artist stage monitoring.

A further three ultra-compact SX110 (1 x 10”) subs were ceiling recessed in the bar area to support 11 of the 26 high performance C6.8T ceiling speakers specified (with a further six assigned to the bar’s diner area). Four C4.8T, some further C6.8T and an elegant, custom painted ADORN A55 maintain the sound through the lounge and private dining areas, as well as ancillary areas such as the restrooms, entrance walkway and hostess station. All recessed ceiling speakers were painted black.

Explaining the rationale behind the multi-zonal design, Mike Denoe states, “We want all areas of the venue to be independently controlled for a better-balanced system. We do not want one area to overpower the other.” For this project no fewer than eight zones have been created inside the building, with a ninth outside.

Denoe is delighted that he was able to fulfil the wishes of the architect and owner “who had wanted the speakers to ‘disappear’ from the beams, due to the historic nature of the restaurant and ornate ceiling.”

In summary he confirms that the client has always been more than satisfied with Martin Audio’s performance throughout his establishments. “Once again, Martin Audio has been able to provide quality audio for the client as well as its patrons. It checks all the boxes and requirements that the client has asked for. The quality of sound Martin Audio provides allows for an entertainment experience in any type of venue.”

TIM MINCHIN MIXES WPS AND WPL PA ARRAYS ON BACK … ENCORE TOUR

With his inimitable repertoire of eclectic music blended with high-brow comedy, Tim Minchin’s UK tour, which began back in 2019, resumed after lockdown with a further eight-week stint. Imaginatively titled Back … Encore, this took him through a number of sold-out UK theatre shows, interspersed with a handful of arena dates.

The Australian was supported onstage by a seven-piece band—three brass players, bass, guitar, drums and percussion. Masterminding the sound production was Martin Audio’s rental partner, Capital Sound, with the highly experienced Dave Roden mixing once again to his favoured Wavefront Precision WPS.

Capital drew on their inventory of 32 WPS line array enclosures but purchased six additional multi-channel, Dante-supporting iKON amplifiers for the tour, enabling the system to be driven in the optimum one-box resolution.

Explaining the need for the expanded WPS inventory this time around, Capital account manager, Martin Connolly, said that the additional elements had provided Dave Roden with increased horsepower when matching to the main hangs and outfills.

“The WPS system is perfectly matched for Minchin,” he said. “It was so successful last time and so Dave [Roden] requested it again.” Crucially, the restricted loading points at some theatres became another defining factor.

However, WPS was supplemented at the three larger capacity arenas—Nottingham Motorpoint, Leeds First Direct and Cardiff Motorpoint—where Martin Audio’s larger WPL took over main duties, moving the WPS out wide to function as side hangs.

Providing low frequency extension were stacks of Martin Audio SX218 subwoofers—varying between six and 16, depending on venue size—along with a combination of DD6 and XD12, which have become standard fare for near-fill support. The XD12s were deployed as outfills on the lip of the stage at the extreme left and right with six DD6 set across the front.

However, there was always the opportunity for a little experimentation. System tech Nick Boulton, who had occupied the same role for Tim Minchin’s 2019 shows, took the opportunity to test drive Martin Audio’s new TORUS constant curvature array on a number of dates.

Martin Audio Product Support Engineer Nigel Meddemmen takes up the story. “Nick was keen to try this in place of the XD12s and so Martin Audio provided a pair of flight-cased T1230s, principally for use at Nottingham and Cardiff Motorpoint Arenas.”

But Boulton saw further potential. “Initially we put them side by side with our existing XD12 infills, and straight out of the box were blown away by the fidelity of them. They required very little EQ to match tonality with our hangs of WPL and WPS.

“Personally, I was also very impressed with the consistent coverage and pattern control. The rigging and cabinet feel high quality, and there are a bunch of cool features, such as the identifying LED, and NL4 pin swap switch, which make things a lot simpler.

“Consequently, we ended up putting them into every show between Hammersmith and Cardiff—and had we had access to more, I’d certainly have used them!”

Dave Roden and Nick Boulton were supported by fellow Capital crew members, Adam Wells (monitor tech) and Oz Bagnall (monitor engineer). Production manager was Ashley Newsome, working for promoter, Phil McIntyre Entertainments.

Summing up, Martin Connolly said the tour had been an unqualified success—not only for the warmth with which Tim Minchin’s show had been received, but the quality of the production. “He is an excellent showman, and running the PA at a comfortable level, between 98db-100db, the sound was extremely clean and the intelligibility high.”

MARTIN AUDIO ANNOUNCES WHITE VERSIONS OF BEST-SELLING WPS AND SXC118 CARDIOID SUBWOOFER

Martin Audio has announced that its best-selling Wavefront Precision optimised line array system, WPS, is now available in white, as a made-to-order option, and is also accompanied by its cardioid subwoofer partner, SXC118.

Designed to set a new benchmark for 8” line arrays, Martin Audio originally announced WPS in 2019—the fourth model in the award-winning Wavefront Precision series—and it has since gone on to be a firm favourite by owners and users alike.

OUR RENTAL PARTNERS, FOH ENGINEERS AND SYSTEM INTEGRATORS, HAVE REALLY TAKEN WPS TO THEIR HEART.

Dom Harter, Martin Audio

As Dom Harter, managing director, explains, “With WPS it was a ground up product development. We wanted to overcome the deficiencies and compromises of other 8” line arrays available on the market. That’s why we believe we have more drivers in WPS than anything else in its class, with spacing, waveguide and crossover point engineered to deliver in particular optimum HF performance with exemplary mid and high frequency pattern control, even at higher SPL. And our rental partners, FOH engineers and system integrators, have really taken WPS to their heart.”

The SXC118 is a cardioid subwoofer featuring an 18” driver in the front and a 14” driver in the rear, coupling together for increased output to the audience while maintain control and reducing noise behind it.

Harter continues, “The success of WPS and its partner sub has naturally meant that for houses of worship and auditoria there was a growing demand for a white variant and so moving forward we are happy to make this available as a made-to-order option.”

Amplifiers For Smart Homes | LEA Install At A 15,000 Sq. Ft. Smart Home

Smart homes are on the rise and it just so happens that our smart amps fit extremely well into the systems powering them.

Our integrator friends at Wired Media Solutions recognized this as well during their recent 15,000 sq. ft. smart home project where they used eleven of our CONNECTSERIES amplifiers to send audio to nearly every room of this gorgeous Newport Beach, CA home. From the kitchen to each bedroom and even the bathrooms, the system is using a total of 84 LEA audio channels to power multiple zones over a Dante distributed network.

Let’s dive into the details!

THE SPEC

AMPLIFIERS FOR SMART HOMES | LEA INSTALL AT A 15,000 SQ. FT. SMART HOME

Venue: 15,000 Sq. Ft. Smart Home in Newport Beach, CA

Install Purpose: System upgrade

Product Used: CONNECTSERIES 168D (X10) and 164D (X1)

THE VENUE

AMPLIFIERS FOR SMART HOMES | LEA INSTALL AT A 15,000 SQ. FT. SMART HOME

The owners of a 15,000-square-foot smart home in Newport Beach, California, wanted to upgrade and integrate an all-home sound system. The home consists of multiple audio zones all run over a Dante networked system. With speakers in nearly every single room as well as the outdoor patio, this home needed a powerful, small form factor amplifier solution.

THE INTEGRATOR

Wired Media Solutions provides seamlessly integrated high-end home automation solutions. Cohesive and invisible, as home automation should be.

THE INSTALL

AMPLIFIERS FOR SMART HOMES | LEA INSTALL AT A 15,000 SQ. FT. SMART HOME

Ryan Wilkinson, President/CEO, WMS Wired Media Solutions, explained that while the home is spacious, the integration team was challenged to fit the equipment into the existing small closet. Wilkinson needed to save as much room as possible to cover the home properly from this space while still delivering the channel count, power, and network connectivity required to distribute and control the audio throughout the house.

We had a big constraint of space and input power, but we still needed a high channel count,” said Wilkinson, “The LEA amplifiers fit perfectly because they are all multi-channel, single-rack-unit amps that don’t draw much power, they have built-in Ethernet connectivity and DSP, and they deliver plenty of output power to handle the entire house.

The team installed a set of 11 Connect Series amplifiers from LEA Professional, including ten 168D 8-channel amplifiers with 160 watts per channel to cover the indoor rooms, and a 164D 4-channel amp, for an outdoor patio area — for a total of 84 audio channels.

Every room and space in the house has speakers — bathrooms, bedrooms, common areas, outdoor areas, kitchen, everywhere — and it’s a mix of different types and brands of speakers,” explained Wilkinson. “Maintaining the ability to power zones individually gave us the ability to finely tune the volume and DSP presets across the various types of speakers and areas.

The LEA amps’ built-in DSP was a big help in this project, and we’re starting to use it more in other smart home installations,” said Wilkinson. “It saves space in the rack, greatly streamlines the entire installation, and makes system set-up and adjustments easy.

Physically, DSP-powered equipment can do more with less, and therefore frees up critical rack space and reduces system weight. All the input routing, room tuning, speaker tuning, and limiting are built into the amplifier, which greatly reduces the need for additional hardware. Not only does this free up rack space, but it also simplifies system setup and reduces the possibility of issues arising within the system.

By using a digital input router, technicians can route any input to any output. And with the integration of an audio network, as with Dante, it’s all just an Ethernet cable away. LEA amplifier built-in DSP features include advanced DSP Architecture, an Input Matrix, Crossovers, Parametric EQ, Output Delay, Output Protection, User-Adjustable Limiting, and Load Monitoring.

The system is all Dante networked and Crestron controlled, and we designed a custom touch-panel interface, so it’s all very easy to manage,” said Wilkinson, “Everything’s time-delayed and leveled correctly; all the limiters and speaker protections are in place, and it sounds great. And if needed, we can remote into the LEA amps for status reports or to make adjustments — we couldn’t be happier.

THE CONCLUSION

AMPLIFIERS FOR SMART HOMES | LEA INSTALL AT A 15,000 SQ. FT. SMART HOME

We’d like to thank Ryan Wilkinson and his team at Wired Media Solutions for choosing our amps for this killer installation and we hope that the audio systems will continue to deliver reliable audio for years to come.

NEW POP GOLF EXPERIENCE LAUNCHES IN WEMBLEY WITH MARTIN AUDIO CDD

Situated at BOXPARK Wembley, a 20,000sq. ft events space described as ‘the ultimate fan park destination’, Pop Golf offers a unique social experience, combining crazy golf with 21st century pop music in a brightly coloured environment. This unusual playground is built on the belief that nothing brings people together like music and play.

Based on a concept devised by Smith & Devil, the venue features a course of nine pop-themed holes paired with a high-octane Martin Audio sound system, provided by partners, Middlesex Sound & Light (MSL).

Director and project manager Darrel Olivier looked no further than the company’s CDD6 / SX112 subwoofer combination, as he has many times in the past.

From Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’ to retro 80’s boomboxes and suspended cassette tapes, each hole is completely unique and has been designed to offer the experience of stepping straight into a music video. Hence MSL also applied some unusual twists and immersive customer interaction.

They were introduced to the project by designer Zachary Pulman (Zachary Pulman Design Studio) with whom they worked previously on the similarly profiled Swingers. Olivier won the pitch and was soon on-site discussing requirements for the multi-zone site with owner Allan Saud, of operators Mighty Adventures. The brief was to provide cutting edge audio technology, that would do justice to the eclectic playlist, profiled by creative director, Kevin Mura (of Smith & Devil). The playlists were curated by Tin Drum, featuring different genres each night, while Open Ear delivered the platform for the music playout.

THE MARTIN AUDIO SOUND SYSTEM, RECOMMENDED AND INSTALLED BY THE MSL TEAM, HAS ENSURED WE ARE ABLE TO DELIVER THE UNIQUE MUSIC EXPERIENCE THAT WE WANT FOR OUR CLIENTS.

Allan Saud, Mighty Adventures

Stated Olivier, “The process began in September last year but became drawn out because of COVID. However, it was a joy to work with because the client had put together a complete 30-page AV presentation pack; they knew exactly what they wanted. There was a strong emphasis on powerful sound with some quirks. For example, in the Sound Lounge experience they have used Ableton Live software run off a 32Gb iPad Pro to enable clients to interact and manipulate the sound.” Any sound source can be sent to any zone with local volume and source select by BSS remote control panels.

Explaining the speaker selection, he said, “The place is like a tin can with high ceilings and hard surfaces so we specified a large quantity of speakers which could be underrun, to mitigate the reflections. We have used the CDD6 many times; aesthetically it is a nice box which works particularly well with the SX112.”

The operation exists on ground floor and mezzanine levels. In total MSL has deployed 22 CDD6 compact 2-way loudspeakers. In the Ground Floor bar, a pair of CDD6 are complemented by a 1 x 12in SX112 subwoofer concealed under the stairs.

Each of the nine crazy golf holes is served by its own CDD6 and color-coded with its own individual RAL colour, with the Martin Audio enclosures are sprayed to match. Three SX112 subs have been specified—two flown and one floor-standing—each providing coverage for three of the holes).

One twist is on Hole 3 where a giant set of headphones has been equipped with a pair of Martin Audio ADORN A55. “As clients walk through it, they trigger different sound effects,” explains Darrel Olivier.

Up on the Mezzanine, each of the two zones is identically equipped with CDD6 in each of the four corners and an SX112 handling the low frequency extension.

DJ plug-in points have been provided on Hole 9—which is designed as a live stage set, with provision for live PA. Further DJ plug-in points can be found in the mezzanine area for private hire clients.

Finally, MSL has provided a full AV infrastructure, with the many media displays used exclusively for digital signage and promo, controlled by Tripleplay.

This is the first Pop Golf venue in what is being positioned as a gradual brand roll-out.

Stated Allan Saud: “The Martin Audio sound system, recommended and installed by the MSL team, has ensured we are able to deliver the unique music experience that we want for our clients. It is both powerful and versatile, making its mark in both the interactive features as well as over the nine golf holes, where the speakers blend in seamlessly.”
